Malden couple lost thousands to home improvement scam – NBC Boston

Massachusetts police departments are warning consumers about shady home improvement contractors taking advantage of customers and taking off with thousands of dollars.

“They did all of this in a day,” said Lydia Cox, pointing to a large trench dug in front of her home in Malden.

The masons Dan and Lydia Cox hired were only supposed to replace the stairs, but they ended up causing $50,000 in damage to their foundation.

“When we looked back there were red flags and should have been obvious,” said Daniel.

KBB top priority for home improvements, new research shows

New consumer research has revealed that kitchens and bathrooms rank high on the priority list for consumers hungry for home improvements.

According to the results of Häfele UK’s ‘Functional Spaces: Homes for Living research almost half (45%) of the 2,000 UK consumers surveyed said they are planning home improvements within the next two years.

The good news for the KBB sector specifically is that a new kitchen (23%) and bathroom renovations (21.4%) were among the top choices for those consumers planning home improvements.

Other planned home improvements include interior decorating (29%), external works such as roofing, gutters and external paintwork

Man charged with stealing $60K in alleged Pittsburgh-area home improvement scam

BRIDGEVILLE, Pa. (KDKA) — A man is in custody, charged with scamming several homeowners out of thousands of dollars for home repairs never done.

According to police, Ryan Blumling promised all kinds of improvements to several homeowners’ houses in Bridgeville. In the end, all he delivered was a bunch of excuses and according to police, it’s not the first time he’s done something like this.

“There’s a lot of good contractors out there. There’s a handful of ones though that live off of scams and frauds,” said Bridgeville Chief Chad King.

Toronto police charge two people in alleged home renovation scam

Toronto police say two people are facing charges in connection with a string of home renovation frauds which saw the victims pressured into hiring contractors for work which was never completed.

The incidents occurred between March and September this year.

According to Toronto police, the suspects went door-to-door offering unsolicited renovation services, using deceptive and high-pressure tactics to obtain roofing and masonry jobs.

The victims paid the suspects, but the renovations were never completed, and the work that was done often caused damage to the victims’ property, police said.
